How's The Weather In Murfreesboro? January, February, March

Text timeline detailing local events and emergencies from Feb 14 to Jan 3.

Overall, January through early (it really varies though) March in Murfreesboro is a rollercoaster of weather, cold mornings, occasional snow, and the first signs of spring. On average, the snowfall during winter is quite modest with an average of less than five inches. It seems we get ice or an ice/snow mix with a lot of our winter events which makes for hazardous driving.  The good news? Snow or ice that falls isn’t usually heavy and doesn't last long.  However, it is enough to send everyone running to the grocery store.  Yes, the jokes are true.  The main roads in the city and the interstates are usually treated well and are typically clear by the day after a storm, if not same day.  However, we have a lot of  backroads and hilly, tree-lined side streets that may not be treated and can be hazardous when ice forms.  These roads can take two or three days to be completely safe for school buses. The school district(s) don't have a fixed number of days they are expected to close for winter weather, but typically, delays or closures happen a few days from January to March, often due to the ice on backroads.

High temperatures Jan-March typically range from the mid-40s to mid-60s°F, with January being the coldest month, average highs are in the upper 40s and lows in the upper 20s. February brings a slow gradual warm-up, with average highs in the lower 50s, but be prepared for frost, brisk breezes, and the occasional cold blast with our average lows at or below freezing. By March, temperatures start climbing into the 60s, making way for more variable weather with rain showers, breezy afternoons (kites), and days when you’ll want a light jacket one moment and air conditioning the next.

This time of year is perfect for layering up, thin long sleeves under cozy sweaters, and a warm jacket are your best friends. Most days start out chilly, but by afternoon, you might be basking in springlike warmth, so dress in versatile layers. Plus, we all know Tennessee has a knack for throwing in a surprise or two, like a sudden snow shower just to keep us on our toes. So, always check the weather forecast before heading out, and keep a close eye on road conditions if there is even a chance of winter weather.

While winter weather is often unpredictable, Murfreesboro is also in an area prone to tornado threats, though they’re less common in January and February. The chances increase sharply in March and peak during spring (April and May). The city is prepared and will open shelters if needed, but residents should stay alert, monitor weather warnings, and have a tornado safety plan.

In Murfreesboro, January to March brings cold mornings, possibly light snow, and eventually signs of spring. Ice on backroads can be hazardous, but main roads are usually cleared quickly. Temperatures range from mid-40s to mid-60s°F, gradually warming. Layer up and stay alert, tornado risk increases from March into April. Dress warmly, check the weather, and enjoy the seasonal change.  Whether you’re visiting during the first part of the year or planning a move, dress warmly, stay flexible, and enjoy the changing season as the beauty of spring quietly begins to blossom in March.  Whether you're looking to buy a cozy winter retreat or enjoy a home that transitions seamlessly into spring, I’m here to help you find the perfect property in Murfreesboro!

How to Care for Your Dog During Murfreesboro’s Winter

Murfreesboro winters are cold and it's crucial to keep your dog safe and comfortable. Keep them indoors as much as possible. If outside, provide a sturdy, draft-free shelter with insulation, and cover the entrance to block wind. Dogs with short coats or those sensitive to cold benefit from a warm sweater or coat.  Protect their paws by wiping them after walks to remove ice-melting chemicals, applying paw balm or boots, and trimming fur between the pads for better traction. Use pet-safe deicers like sand or non-clumping litter around your home.  Limit outdoor time, especially for puppies, seniors, or short-haired breeds, and keep them leashed near frozen water or harmful substances like antifreeze. Watch for signs of hypothermia or frostbite, such as shivering, whining, or weakness, and seek emergency vet care if needed. Never allow your dog to walk on thin ice.  Ensure they stay well-fed with extra calories if outdoors regularly, keep fresh water available (consider heated bowls), and store antifreeze securely. Check for cats seeking warmth under cars before starting your vehicle. Prepare for storms with a 5-day pet supply, and schedule regular vet visits to address winter-related health issues like arthritis.

By taking these precautions, you’ll keep your furry friend safe, warm, and happy throughout the chilly Murfreesboro winter.
